The rolls
Rolling under a hook to the right and to the left.
Where it stands
| Technique | Teacher kept | In the student | Own runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| roll right | none yet | not yet | 2 |
| roll left | none yet | not yet | 2 |
Both rolls come from my motion capture, Muay Thai 02, take_01: rolling under to the right (26.35–27.50 s) and to the left (27.45–28.60 s). A roll has no target. It counts when the head passes within 5 cm of where my head is at the bottom of the roll. Their teachers were cloned from the student distill4 on 25 October, four evasion teachers on four machines at once (work log).
The first round passed the gate and failed on video. rollR1-238.5M scored 8 of 8 at 2.5 cm, and rollL1-226.3M 8 of 8 at 6.3 cm, but both dropped rather than rolled, and rollL1’s head swept across the wrong way. They played my clips 1.24 and 1.29 times as fast on average: the punch clock, built for punches, squeezed the roll into a drop.
I asked for a roll to the side like a U shape. My reference’s path was narrow, so it was widened to take the head 25 cm out, with a reward for the head following it. The pelvis couldn’t move the head that far, so the trunk did it with a side bend at its 50° limit, and the teachers learnt the bend: rollL2b bent 51° with the head tilted 59°, and rollR2 bent 47°, skipped the lead-in and hit only 4 of 8. (rollL2’s first machine ran at a third of the usual speed and was restarted as rollL2b.) A rebuilt reference, with the pelvis moving and the trunk straight, looked physically wrong to me and was never trained.
All four roll teachers are recorded as failed, and none is kept. They start again from my original capture, with the clock held to its pace and a gate that measures timing and shape.
What I think, as a coach
On the first round: “The roll should not just be a drop, it should roll to the side like a U shape.”
On the second: “Slip and roll are all wrong. It’s going sideways but not by bending the torso. The torso can rotate but don’t bend (too much)”. Then: “Keep to my original reference, like the one from motion capture.”
The lesson I take is that the motion capture has to stay mine. Every time the reference was edited to get a cleaner number, the movement got less like Muay Thai.
Every attempt
Every run that trained these techniques on its own, in order.
